  • Tan wool ensemble. A. Skirt is heavily gathered, wide straight waistband, center back zipper, inverted box pleat at center front with three released tucks on each side, no side seams, slash pockets hidden under the tucks, unlined throughout. One seam at center back, hand finished. B. Stole lays across shoulders. Heavy chevron pattern braid in brown and beige holds pleats in back. Self-facings with more braid, unlined. Hand finished.   • Beige silk georgette blouse and skirt ensemble; beige ground with an all-over brown spatter pattern to imitate stone. A. Tailored blouse; winged collar, center front button closure, sleeveless with bias binding, darts for shaping, double layer of fabric over bust area, unlined. B. Gathered skirt into straight waistband, midcalf length, unlined, hand finished with French seams throughout. Worn by Valentina.
  • Dark navy blue silk tissue taffeta evening ensemble. A. Wrap-around blouse; V-neck; narrow shawl collar; long Dolman sleeves with unusual seaming; long wrap ties thread through opening in blouse; completely hand finished and over-cast. B. Skirt; stitched-down inverted pleats at center front and back; Triangular shaped back yoke has covered button/loop closure, one button is missing; Hand finished; Unlined; Full evening length.   • Dark brown sheer silk georgette skirt; accordion pleated, Straight waistband with a center back hook and eye closure, center back seam is not closed, made from one piece of fabric cut on the cross grain, mid-calf length. Worn by Valentina.
  • Monastic style black silk velvet evening gown; jewel neckline edged with black cording, long dolman sleeves, empire waist, cording runs through thread carriers at waistline, extended with shirring at wrist, A-line skirt, full evening length. Hand over-cast & hand finished. Lots of small tears throughout, some of which have been patched or mended. Worn by Valentina.
  • Copper colored silk taffeta wrap-around overskirt; waistband has extended hook and eye closure at center front, skirt does not meet at center front, two bronze changeable silk taffeta panels at sides, antique gold taffeta panel at back, full evening length. Shown with underskirt (Object ID #2008.01.44). Worn by Valentina.
  • Black silk satin wrap-around over-skirt; worn with the opening at center front, does not completely close. Extended ties fasten at center front, bustle-like effect at center back with pleated and weighted material, Made from one continuous piece of fabric, full length. Design was still in progress. Possibly worn over pink taffeta skirt (Object ID #2008.01.44). Worn by Valentina.
  • Off-white silk charmeuse peignoir gown; bias cut, standing collar, drop shoulder long sleeves with gussets, pointed seaming into shoulder, dips to "v" at center back, high waist forms a point at center front and center back, full evening length flared skirt. All seaming is hand-faggoting, fabric over-printed with subtle brushy floral. Worn with ochre crepe cape (Object ID #1995.369). Worn by Valentina.
  • Black silk chiffon fit and flare cocktail dress; band collar with attached tie that pleats into the neckline, underlined with silk crepe. Bodice has halter effect, very bare in back. Dolman sleeves, bias ties stitched down at back waistline, then released. Natural waist dips at center back, gathered skirt, knee length, underlined with silk crepe. Worn by Valentina.
  • Black silk tulle surplice wrap overdress; jewel neckline, straight long sleeves, hook and eye closure at left side front. Gathered skirt with stabilized waistband, mid-calf length. Finished with tiny machine-sewn French seams. Worn over underdress (Object ID #1995.331). Worn by Valentina.
  • Pale pink silk taffeta skirt; flared, ankle length. Seam allowances are hand-overcast. There are many threadless stitching lines, suggesting the garment was remodeled from another garment. Probably by Valentina, to be worn under her overskirts. Originally no hem or waistband. To prepare the skirt for an exhibition, Sister Aloyse Hessburg put in a turned, machine-stitched hem and added a pink silk ribbon waistband.
  • Black silk tulle surplice wrap dress; v-shaped neckline, straight bracelet-length sleeves cut on the bias, natural waist seam, five button/loop closures at left side front of surplice wrap (two buttons missing), full length bell skirt. Finished with tiny machined French seams. Worn by Valentina.
  • Brown linen skirt suit. A. Jacket; collarless, square set-in sleeves, seaming at back creates a peplum shape, three 1/2" covered buttons and bound buttonhole closure at center front. B. Skirt; dirndl style, large pleat worked as part of each inset pocket.

  • White medium-heavy linen jacket; collarless, square set-in sleeves, side front seams, waist seam, hip length, hemline dips at center back seam. Front opening slightly overlaps in V-shape with small notch opening at top of neckline. Three button closure at center front, bound buttonholes, matching fabric-covered buttons. Discoloration at center front closure.

  • Pale pink silk organza evening gown ensemble. A. Gown; v-neckline, long full bell sleeves, criss-cross bodice extending into tie belt at center front, very full flared skirt, ankle length. B. Neck sash; 120" long by 5.5" wide, doubled. C. Slip; one layer of organza and one layer of taffeta, V-neckline with 2" strap narrowing to 1" at shoulder, full length. Slight discoloration throughout, torn in several places near waist and bodice. Some patching has been done.

    Worn by Lynn Fontanne. Either this version or the white version (Object ID #1983.185) was worn to the 1941 Academy Awards ceremony. Donor was the niece of Lynn Fontanne and Alfred Lunt.

  • Red wool fitted jacket; high Mandarin collar, long sleeves darted at shoulders, five button closure at center front, bound buttonholes, covered buttons (two missing), flap pockets at hip. Alteration at center front.
