Title

"Living Rosary"

Description

This photo was probably taken in 1954. The Living Rosary was a traditional ceremony featuring members of the student body forming the shape of a rosary on Madonna Circle in front of Notre Dame Hall. The cross usually consisted of the May Queen and her court. Other students represented the Pater Nosters and the Ave Marias of the rosary. The Rosary pageant probably began circa 1937 as part of the annual May Day celebrations. The school began observing May Day in 1931, during the first full academic year.

This image is part of a collection of snapshots likely taken by Virginia Moore or her friends with a personal camera during Virginia's time as a student at Mount Mary College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (1953-1957). The snapshots were printed on Kodak Velox paper. The captions are primarily based upon information found on the back of the original photos, most likely written by Virginia. Some images had no information at all and individuals or events are identified based on other captions and information available in the Mount Mary archives. Captions in quotes are verbatim from the original images.
