About this collection

Welcome to "In the Words of Women: A Mount Mary Storytelling Project," our ongoing collection of audio stories recorded by the Mount Mary community!

Background

The idea was hatched as part of the inaugural cohort of the American Library Association's (ALA) Civic Imagination Stations, which began in summer 2022. In addition to Haggerty Library and its creative partner, StoryMKE, the project involved:

  • Students in Composition and Writing for New Media classes

  • StoryMKE staff and a fellow (from Marquette University)

  • Milwaukee creatives

  • Students from Milwaukee Public Schools

Haggerty Library's high-tech Storybooth, purchased jointly with grant funds from the ALA, STEM by Design, and Proyecto Descubrir, is available for individuals or classes who wish to share their stories - short, long, or somewhere in-between. It lives in the library's café space.

As Mount Mary begins to build a storytelling culture around campus, this Digital Collections site will be home to a growing collection of wide-ranging stories.

Recordings

Find and listen to the recordings!

Please note that some recordings may contain explicit language or traumatic themes. Library staff understands that this may be triggering to some and will endeavor to communicate this on individual recordings whenever possible.

A Wider Audience

Mount Mary University participates in state and national collections of digital materials. With creators' permission, recordings will be shared with Recollection Wisconsin (which collects state and local history resources) and Digital Public Library of America (a national aggregator). This allows a broader audience access to the stories of the Mount Mary community. Creators may also choose to only display their stories in Mount Mary's exhibit and not share them more widely.
