  • Navy blue crocheted wool lace over white tulle afternoon dress; lace pattern of large round flowers with oblong leaves; large oblong shapes at hips; jewel neckline tucked to shape; sleeveless; natural waistline seam; left side zipper closure; mid-calf length.
  • A. Black crepe and fringe evening gown; cowl neckline at front; deep V-neckline at back; thin straps wrapped with fringe; straight silhouette; fringe starts at hips and goes down to floor; applied on base in chevron pattern; floor length.

    Worn with capelet (Object ID #2015.03.01.b) to form two piece evening ensemble.

    This ensemble was given to the donor's mother by a wealthy lady she worked for in New York City in the 1920s and '30s. The woman's identity is unknown. A bolduc was found on back of tag with words "Mrs. Vreeland". This dress might have belonged to Diane Vreeland, although this is not confirmed.

B. Black crepe and fringe capelet; fringe applied to base in chevron pattern; hem of capelet is also chevron shaped; center front opening with snap closure at neck; label: "Mainbocher, 12 Avenue George V a Paris"; twill tape bolduc on back of label: "21381- Mrs. Vreeland".

  • Navy silk chiffon evening gown; large red flowers, tie-dye or batiked fabric; very full sleeves; straight skirt; attached scarf at neckline that flows down back; underdress of navy crepe with beige yoke. Worn by Hildegarde.
  • Gray wool flannel dress; jewel neckline; sleeveless; seam going down center front, forms into box pleat; 2 princess seams that come down into waist and form box pleats, one princess seam starts at shoulder and other starts at middle of front armhole; 3 horizontal seams; one goes through center front seam and is located right under bust, extending from center seam to first princess seams on each side; other horizontal seams are side seams that extend .5 inch from armpits and go to first princess seam closest to side of garment; center back zipper closure that forms into box pleat; 2 back princess seams on either side of zipper, these also form box pleats; knee length. The donor, Sharon Lipinski, constructed this dress in Sister Aloyse Hessburg's Couture class.
  • Tan and white geometric abstract printed silk twill dress; standing collar; halter neckline; empire waistline; flared skirt; ball buttons and loops at center front.

  • Gold lamé evening gown; long, slim silhouette; bias cut; backless; halter; V-neckline; self-fabric sash hooks around waist; train. Garment is in poor condition. Hildegarde's first Paris gown.
  • A. Black lace gown; camisole bodice; fitted skirt; bands of pleated chiffon trimmed with 1/2 inch pink grosgrain ribbons running from side bodice down back across hem and up other side. B. Black slip, likely of silk or rayon; white straps have been sewn on at a later date mimicking the straps of the evening gown.

  • Black satin handbag; two fabric straps; interior metal frame, making three pockets; frame has silver metal lion which extends to outside of bag; satin is frayed at top. 7 inches wide by 5.5 inches tall.
