Zandra Rhodes II ensemble
A. Brown wool tweed wrap-around full skirt; pleated, hem decorated with printed satin band 5 inches wide with brown satin ribbon above and black grosgrain ribbon below, above knee length. B. Brown wool tweed jacket; wide portrait collar covered with brown embroidery throughout, knotted fringe on edge of collar, long set-in sleeves with embroidery at wrist, fitted through waist, hip length, one button closure, lined in orange taffeta. Part of ensemble with blouse (Object ID #2013.04.17.C).

WAVES uniform
Navy blue wool WAVES (Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service) uniform. A. Jacket; set-in sleeves; light blue stripe and star at wrists; padded shoulders; two fake pockets above bustline; four gold buttons at front opening; princess seams at front and back; completely lined; two inside pockets; Mrs. Judge's name stitched in collar; appliqué anchor sewn on each lapel. B. Skirt; six gores; welt pockets in front; 1 inch waistband; left side zipper closure with button; not lined. C. Hat; fold-over; anchor insignia patch.
Worn by donor, Jean Judge, during World War II. According to the donor, the skirt pockets are in roughly the same position as the corresponding buttons on sailor pants. The squared-off dress hat was copied after the British seaman's hat of 18th century. The donor's was mildewed and has only the fold-over hat left, which was their Class B hat. They wore white shirts and black ties with suit for dress and navy shirts and light blue ties for work. Optional light blue shirts were available. They were allowed nylons; Navy Nurses had to wear black cotton hose. They wore a protective navy blue wool hat covering, called a havelock, in inclement weather and were not allowed to carry umbrellas or parcels. A black shoulder strap leather bag was worn with this uniform and with summer whites. Heels were no higher than 2 inches and skirt lengths 17 to 18 inches from floor. Gold buttons on jacket were for officers, plain blue plastic for non-commissioned. One blue sleeve stripe indicated lowly Ensign. The men never let them have gold stripes such as theirs. -

Bodice; asymmetrically draped, off the shoulder, long sleeves, pointed waistline in front, center back zipper, internal black corset. B. Skirt; asymmetrically draped, knee length, side zipper. -

Evening suit ensemble. A. Pale orange silk/rayon burnout velvet tunic; lavender and metallic gold velvet flowers and leaves pattern, lower section is lavender and gold lace, sleeveless, deep v-neckline, one button closure at the waistline, knee length. B. Lavender and gold lace jacket; surplice front, low v-neckline, long set-in sleeves, loops for buttons, lined in beige tulle. C. Lavender and gold lace skirt; straight silhouette, straight waistband with invisible zipper, lined in beige tulle. -

Beige plain weave linen suit A. Jacket; short boxy shaped; jewel neckline; two-piece raglan sleeves; diagonal bias-bound breast pockets; two diagonal pockets near hem; concealed buttons with fabric loops down center front; large button at neckline and hemline and bound buttonholes; deep open box pleat down center back; lined in beige silk. B. Slim straight skirt; partially hand-stitched folded center front pleat, ending in deep open pleat with a large crystallized beige button and buttonhole two inches above hem length; eleven inch long center back slit with flap; zipper on the left side. -

Tan unbalanced plain weave suit with horizontal black stripe of fine silk and wool mixture. A. Jacket; funnel collar; short set-in sleeves; front opening with six covered buttons and bound buttonholes; set-in strip of fabric with vertical stripes on chest and hips; flap of fake pocket on chest left and hip right. B. Straight skirt; straight waistband; side metal zipper closure; inset of vertical striped fabric at knee; mid-calf length. -

Jacket; slightly shaped; V-neckline; flat rounded petal collar; set-in long sleeves with narrow cuffs; set-in scalloped style bodice- front, back and hem; five self-covered buttons down front with bound buttonholes; open center back vent; lined in gold silk. B. Slim straight skirt; eleven inch long center back slit; deep flap; zipper on left side; mid-calf length. -

Black wool crepe suit. A. Jacket; slightly fitted; stand-away shaped mandarin collar; attached flat collar underneath; set-in three quarter sleeves; graduated-size bound buttonholes down front; top three buttons in metal with a mock royal British seal, two ruby colored stones in crown, a Latin inscription, and "This is an Irene" below insignia; pocket flaps; slightly fitted back with center vent; underlined in gold silk crepe. B. Slim skirt; center back kick pleat and flap; zipper on left-hand side; attached black crepe underskirt. -

Pale beige wool crepe suit. A. Jacket; short; long sleeves; hidden-button closing; one large button buttoning-through; seamed front extends to become hip-band at back. B. Skirt; straight; knee length. -

Beige wool fitted suit. A. Jacket; windbreaker collar; double breasted; five button center front closure; straight sleeves, unraveling at hems; seam off shoulder; watch pocket with flap at right hip. B. Skirt; A-line; six gores; no waistband; knee length. Skirt has been altered. -

Jacket; jewel neckline; high cut revers; set-in three-quarter sleeves with cut-outs; fitted silhouette with curved diagonal darts; unusual scalloped hem and pockets; bias-bound breast pocket; three large and four small self-covered buttons with bound buttonholes at center front; 51/2 inch long center back slit; underlined in beige silk. Label: "Irene" in script on beige silk. B. Skirt; straight cut; darts on self-band; four inch long slit of either side for ease in walking. -

Jacket; notched collar; three large butttons with bound buttonholes down center front; kimono style dolman sleeves, three-quarter length; cut-in side front panels; attached two inch wide self-belt; underlined in reddish orange silk. Label: "Irene" beige silk with brown script. B. Straight skirt; tucks on self-band; side zipper closure; knee length. -

Jacket; long and fitted; notched collar; deep squared yoke in front; deep "V" yoke in back; two large oval-shaped "cameo" buttons and wide bound buttonholes on front yoke; four small self-bound buttons and bound buttonholes below; long set-in sleeves with slit cuffs; lined in beige silk. B. Skirt; very slim; seaming forms "V" at center back; inverted pleat near hem; seven inch long hand-overcast zipper on left side. -
