  • Dark navy blue silk tissue taffeta evening ensemble. A. Wrap-around blouse; V-neck; narrow shawl collar; long Dolman sleeves with unusual seaming; long wrap ties thread through opening in blouse; completely hand finished and over-cast. B. Skirt; stitched-down inverted pleats at center front and back; Triangular shaped back yoke has covered button/loop closure, one button is missing; Hand finished; Unlined; Full evening length. Worn by Valentina.
  • Tan wool ensemble. A. Skirt is heavily gathered, wide straight waistband, center back zipper, inverted box pleat at center front with three released tucks on each side, no side seams, slash pockets hidden under the tucks, unlined throughout. One seam at center back, hand finished. B. Stole lays across shoulders. Heavy chevron pattern braid in brown and beige holds pleats in back. Self-facings with more braid, unlined. Hand finished. Worn by Valentina.
  • Blouse and skirt ensemble of black silk brocade with all over floral motif of five-petaled flowers and leaves. A. Short overblouse; jewel neckline, center front opening, slight asymmetrical wrap front with three hook and eye closures at the waist, bracelet-length dolman sleeves are cut in one with bodice, unlined with hand-overcast seams and double overcast facings. B. Skirt gathers into a straight waistband with hook and eye closures, midcalf length, unlined. All hand-overcast. Worn by Valentina.
  • Warp print white taffeta gown with pattern of bouquets of light blue roses with green leaves, rosebuds scattered about. A. Halter top bodice; jewel neckline with center front slit, low back with a long center back zipper. Lined in slubby silk plain weave. B. Long skirt; gathered into straight waistband, side inseam pockets, ankle length, unlined, hand finished. C. Stole; rectangular. Possibly this material was pleated and attached to the back of the halter top to form a bustle. Worn by Valentina.
  • Taupe silk tulle ensemble. A. Dirndl underdress with spaghetti straps, bodice of crepe backed satin with the crepe side showing. Skirt is gathered tulle over taffeta lining, midcalf length. B. Tulle overdress; surplice wrap front with hook and eye closure, long straight sleeves, gathered skirt is mid-calf length. C. Rectangular shaped tulle cape slips over the head with tails hanging down the back. Worn by Valentina.
  • Beige georgette ensemble of a dress, jacket, and belt. A. Dress has halter neckline that closes at nape with two hook and clip closures, sleeveless, natural waistline, bodice closes at lower center back with five hook and clip closures. Skirt gathered at waist, floor length with extra panel that wraps over back closure and is secured with six snaps. B. Jacket with high neckline with buttonhole and clip closure at nape, bracelet length modified Angel sleeves that start at elbow. Rest of jacket has no seams and sits like a shawl. Large slit in center front. Back is bare. C. Belt has six hook and eye closures at back, sits at natural waist, brown decorative arrow detail at center front.

  • White floral matelasse suit. A. Jacket; jewel neckline, ¾ length set-in sleeves, center front opening with three covered buttons, single flap vertical pockets are set into the waist darts, slits at the sides, lined in white silk crepe. B. Skirt; straight waistband with left front closure, pockets set into pleats on the princess line, straight silhouette, ankle length, lined in white china silk. Worn by Valentina.
  • Beige and dark brown hand-woven wool tweed suit; yarn appears hand spun with large slubs. A. Jacket; cardigan shape, collarless, six plastic beige buttons and hand stitched buttonholes, slash pocket vents in the back on the princess line. B. Skirt; waist facing, center back zipper, one slash pocket on the right-hand side, separate silk lining attached to the waist facing. Label Valentina.
  • Brown wool bouclé suit. A. Cardigan jacket; jewel neckline with one button closure at center front, drop shoulder sleeves, two single welt diagonal pockets, fingertip length, unlined. Hong Kong seam finishes. B. A-line skirt; high rise waist with no band, one double welt pocket at right hip, no side seams, midcalf length. Worn by Valentina.
  • Royal blue silk shantung stole with flocked black linear daisy pattern; Pelerine type; shaped triangle with black silk taffeta linging used as binding; double snap closure. Possibly not designed by Valentina due to different construction techniques. Worn by Valentina.
  • Brown linen skirt suit. A. Jacket; collarless, square set-in sleeves, seaming at back creates a peplum shape, three 1/2" covered buttons and bound buttonhole closure at center front. B. Skirt; dirndl style, large pleat worked as part of each inset pocket.

    Worn by Lynn Fontanne. Donor was the niece of Lynn Fontanne and Alfred Lunt.
  • Red tartan plaid wool twill A-line skirt; waistband in red, yellow and black. Front of skirt has two box pleats behind which are pockets, skirt closes at center back with a zipper which has been altered at a later date by adding an inset of fabric at the zipper to increase size of the waist and hips, calf length, unlined.
  • Dark brown sheer silk georgette skirt; accordion pleated, Straight waistband with a center back hook and eye closure, center back seam is not closed, made from one piece of fabric cut on the cross grain, mid-calf length. Worn by Valentina.
  • Copper colored silk taffeta wrap-around overskirt; waistband has extended hook and eye closure at center front, skirt does not meet at center front, two bronze changeable silk taffeta panels at sides, antique gold taffeta panel at back, full evening length. Shown with underskirt (Object ID #2008.01.44). Worn by Valentina.
  • Black silk satin wrap-around over-skirt; worn with the opening at center front, does not completely close. Extended ties fasten at center front, bustle-like effect at center back with pleated and weighted material, Made from one continuous piece of fabric, full length. Design was still in progress. Possibly worn over pink taffeta skirt (Object ID #2008.01.44). Worn by Valentina.
  • Pale pink silk taffeta skirt; flared, ankle length. Seam allowances are hand-overcast. There are many threadless stitching lines, suggesting the garment was remodeled from another garment. Probably by Valentina, to be worn under her overskirts. Originally no hem or waistband. To prepare the skirt for an exhibition, Sister Aloyse Hessburg put in a turned, machine-stitched hem and added a pink silk ribbon waistband.
  • White silk shantung pleated skirt; dropped waist, bandless yoke, mid-calf length.

  • A. Red silk taffeta tartan plaid skirt with green, yellow and white stripes. Dirndl skirt; gathered waist, knee length, has many small pleats, hem narrowly turned under once but not sewn, pins holding seam at the center back, unlined, unfinished. Red grosgrain ribbon hanging from the waist, likely meant as a waistband, white Valentina label. Worn by Valentina.

  • Pale pink beige silk pongee skirt; flared, bias cut with side seams only, high rise shaped waistband with multiple rows of horizontal topstitching, three button center front closure, floor length, hand-turned hem. Worn by Valentina.
  • Black wool crepe skirt; inverted pleats to either side of center front, no side seams, diagonal darts at side fronts with inseam style pockets, center back zipper, split at center front waistband, hand finished. Worn by Valentina.
