Tan poplin shirtwaist school uniform dress; military style; asymmetrical center front placket with brass buttons in floral motif; black ribbon bow at center neckline; long sleeves with turned-back cuffs; small twill tape label sewn inside: "Bettie Harnischfeger". B. White poplin school uniform collar and black bow; starched; detachable from dress. C. Black patent leather school uniform belt; brass buckle with school motto in Latin: "Cogitare; Agere; Esse" which translates to "To think; To do; To be".

    Worn by the donor, Mrs. Elizabeth Ogden (née Bettie Harnischfeger), as a student at Westover Boarding School in Middlebury, Connecticut. The school uniform was designed by Mainbocher at the request of Mrs. William Paley. It was worn with starched white collar, tied bow tie, and polished shoes. This costume was checked daily; if incorrect, the student was required to memorize a literary piece and recite it to other students. Mrs. Ogden attended this school from 1937-1939 (ages 15-17), known as a "two year girl". The khaki uniform was the day uniform.

  • A. Black and white check wool bolero jacket; notched collar; two black 1.25 inch buttons/bound buttonhole center front closure; straight sleeves; lined with light orange silk shantung. B. Black and white check wool skirt; dirndl style; knee length. C. Light orange silk shantung blouse; standing collar with attached tie; double-breasted center front closure; elastic at waist with peplum; sleeveless. D. Black patent leather belt; 1.75 inches wide.
  • Black and yellow straw picture hat; black patent leather hatband and rose decoration; black veiling.

Green, bronze, and black plaid silk satin evening gown; tight-fitting bodice of green and black plaid; off-the-shoulder sleeves attached to bodice with fabric strips, stitched at upper arm, then released into fullness and stitched again at sleeve hems; voluminous skirt; pleated 1.5 inches from waistline, released into deep pleat effect; back zipper closure. Label: "Bruyere Paris Place Vendome". B. Black patent leather belt; four inches wide. Performance gown worn by Hildegarde.
