    In May 1964, Mount Mary College awarded an Honorary Degree to Nelle Harper Lee, Pulitzer Prize winning author of To Kill A Mockingbird. In accepting the honor Ms. Lee traveled to Mount Mary and took part in commencement ceremonies, which resulted in a friendship between her and Sister John Francis Schuh, President of Mount Mary.

  • Navy blue wool WAVES uniform. A. Jacket; set-in sleeves; light blue stripe and star at wrists; padded shoulders; two fake pockets above bustline; four gold buttons at front opening; princess seams at front and back; completely lined; two inside pockets; Mrs. Judge's name stitched in collar; applique' anchor sewn on each lapel. B. Skirt; six gores; welt pockets in front; 1 inch waistband; left side zipper closure with button; not lined. C. Hat; fold-over; anchor insignia patch.

    Worn by donor, Jean Judge, during World War II. According to the donor, the skirt pockets are in roughly the same position as the corresponding buttons on sailor pants. The squared-off dress hat was copied after the British seaman's hat of 18th century. The donor's was mildewed and has only the fold-over hat left, which was their Class B hat. They wore white shirts and black ties with suit for dress and navy shirts and light blue ties for work. Optional light blue shirts were available. They were allowed nylons; Navy Nurses had to wear black cotton hose. They wore a protective navy blue wool hat covering, called a havelock, in inclement weather and were not allowed to carry umbrellas or parcels. A black shoulder strap leather bag was worn with this uniform and with summer whites. Heels were no higher than 2 inches and skirt lengths 17 to 18 inches from floor. Gold buttons on jacket were for officers, plain blue plastic for non-commissioned. One blue sleeve stripe indicated lowly Ensign. The men never let them have gold stripes such as theirs.

  • Turquoise silk evening bolero jacket covered with clear iridescent sequins; jewel neckline; long set-in sleeves; center front zipper closure, zipper sticks when closing; padded shoulders; unlined.
  • Deep orange wool twill jacket; wide convertible collar; buttoned neckline tab; long dolman sleeves; six gold/orange buttons/bound buttonholes closure; two French darts; seam down center back; lined in cinnamon color nylon twill.
  • Red brocade slippers; high around the ankle.

    Worn by Lynn Fontanne. Donor was the niece of Lynn Fontanne and Alfred Lunt.
  • Child's light blue and white vertical striped dress; A-line; sleeveless; scoop neckline; center front appliqué of tree with green leaves and brunette child wearing a red dress and holding an apple; 1 button and snap at each shoulder and under each armpit; label reads "Florence Eiseman designed for Marshall Field & Company".

    This dress is from Florence Eiseman's "Functional Fashions" line for children with disabilities from the early 1960s.
  • Pink sequined evening gown; empire style; standing collar; short sleeves; full evening length; attached wide pink satin belt under bust; "Mermaid", completely hand-sequined.
  • Yellow silk twill blouse; Peter Pan collar; 5 covered button/bound buttonhole center front closures; bodice gathered onto banded bottom; long sleeves; part of left sleeve has come unstitched.
  • Child's navy blue nylon Helenca tank swimsuit; white banding at neckline, armholes, and leg holes; white flower appliqué with stem and leaves at center front.
  • A. Dark green leather skirt; gathered; elastic waistband; two large top-stitched patch pockets, shaped flaps and brass turn-screw closures; above the knee length. B. Dark green leather belt; two inches wide; four brass turn-screw adjustable closures.
  • Multi color patchwork poncho formed from squares of orange, mustard, and pink wool bouclé; strips of orange suede connect squares; not lined; double snap closure at neckline; knee length.
  • Magenta taffeta evening gown; deep V-neckline in front; short kimono sleeves; pointed bodice; side zipper closure; full skirt, grabbed and stitched together in four small horizontal tucks throughout; ankle length; small train; couture techniques; pleated strip is unsewn on left front shoulder. Worn by Hildegarde.
  • Pink floral silk satin brocade dinner dress; print of large dark pink and gray peonies with sprays of grasses; deep V-neckline outlined with small self-covered buttons and fabric loops down front; long dolman sleeves with gussets; high waist; tie belt; princess style; bias-cut full skirt; mid-calf length.
  • A. Black velvet overblouse; bateau neckline; heavy black scroll braid trim; left side zipper closure; cap sleeves with braid decoration. B. Dark yellow jacquard brocade skirt; fabric is diamond design; inverted pleats into straight waistband of skirt; center back closure has bustle effect; mid-calf length; lined with silk organza.
  • Yellow wool coat with yellow and white houndstooth accents; princess silhouette; single breasted; brass button closure; two patch pockets in houndstooth; raglan sleeves with seven inch deep houndstooth cuff; true double cloth construction.
  • Red and fuschia silk brocade silk brocade dress; metallic floral and leaves, bodice covered in rows of pleated fuchsia organza with frayed ends, pleats held down with rows of red beads, V-neckline in front, sleeveless, skirt fitted through hips and wide at knee, center back zipper, two red godets in skirt in back, lined in light beige chiffon. This item is from Gianni Calignano Spring/Summer 2008.
  • Royal blue silk shantung stole with flocked black linear daisy pattern; Pelerine type; shaped triangle with black silk taffeta linging used as binding; double snap closure. Possibly not designed by Valentina due to different construction techniques. Worn by Valentina.
