  • A. Tan poplin shirtwaist school uniform dress; military style; asymmetrical center front placket with brass buttons in floral motif; black ribbon bow at center neckline; long sleeves with turned-back cuffs; small twill tape label sewn inside: "Bettie Harnischfeger". B. White poplin school uniform collar and black bow; starched; detachable from dress. C. Black patent leather school uniform belt; brass buckle with school motto in Latin: "Cogitare; Agere; Esse" which translates to "To think; To do; To be".

    Worn by the donor, Mrs. Elizabeth Ogden (née Bettie Harnischfeger), as a student at Westover Boarding School in Middlebury, Connecticut. The school uniform was designed by Mainbocher at the request of Mrs. William Paley. It was worn with starched white collar, tied bow tie, and polished shoes. This costume was checked daily; if incorrect, the student was required to memorize a literary piece and recite it to other students. Mrs. Ogden attended this school from 1937-1939 (ages 15-17), known as a "two year girl". The khaki uniform was the day uniform.

Black slip, likely of silk or rayon; white straps have been sewn on at a later date mimicking the straps of the evening gown.

  • A. Ivory 4 ply crepe shirtdress; large roll collar; 3 tucks on each side of opening; center front closure of covered buttons down length of dress; long set-in shirt sleeves with cuff; no waist definition or seams; backed in white acetate; long. B. Black satin ribbon belt; stitched to center back and sides of dress.
  • A. Black wool jersey tunic top; high round neckline; front of tunic is cut on bias; five self-covered buttons and bound buttonholes. B. Black wool jersey straight skirt; lined; short length. C. Black wool jersey belt; self-covered button and bound buttonhole.
  • Black, white, and beige striped silk chiffon ensemble. A. Blouse; high neckline with small standing collar; four snaps at collar; long sleeves ending in bound cuffs; sleeves gathered at shoulder cap; flared and gathered peplum; large ruffle from left shoulder down and incorporated into peplum; hand-rolled hems on fly-away ruffle; two snap closures at left waist. B. Harem pants; band at waist; two snaps and zipper closure at center back; voluminous pant legs end in tight cuffs at ankles with each cuff closed with two snaps. C. Belt; middle part of belt lined with solid taupe fabric under silk, and black on the back; unbacked ties at either end; chiffon at middle of belt is gathered. D. Light taupe silk charmeuse teddy; bias-cut; V-neckline; spaghetti straps; gathering at bust; small inverted triangular cut-out just below center bust; seams down center back and center front; very short inseam. Accompanied by original sketch of garment (Object ID #2024.02.02).

    Designed and built by the Fashion Design student as a couture project in 1981 at Mount Mary College. Val recalls being mentored by Sister Aloyse Hessburg and Charles Kleibacker (especially in fitting). The fabric was purchased from Kovack Fabrics in downtown Milwaukee where she worked for numerous years.

Turquoise silk crepe skirt; dirndl style; layered, ankle length with longer blue underlayer that matches color of jacket. C. Two-tone blue and turquoise beaded braid tie belt.
